Dante In The Inferno Character Analysis - 721 Words

In the journey to the other world in the Inferno, Virgil function as a guide to Dante as they go down through the gates of Hell. However, Virgils function is not limited just as a guidance to Dante, but also as an instructor and communicator. As their journey processes through the gates of Hell, Virgil explains to Dante the characteristic and structures of the concentric rings of Hell and the punishment received. At one point Dante starts to feel pity for the punishment that some of the souls are receiving, but Virgil does not show any sympathy to the souls and reminds Dante the these souls are receiving such punishment equally to the crimes committed in the human life because that is what God wanted. During Dante journey with Virgil down the cycles of hell; Dante encounters many souls being punished in Hell for the actions committed when th ey were alive. Dante believes that the punish the souls is receiving is because they did not follow the God’s way. The level of punishment is decided by Mions depending on the sin committed and the more levels the soul would have to descend. For example in Canto IV Cerberus is the punishment for the agony greedy sinners. Cerberus punishment is to grind on all the gluttonous souls eternally. Dante Inferno Divine Comedy world can be broken down by three parts Hell, Purgatory and Heaven. The first part of the Divine Comedy is placed in the realm of Hell; where Dante starts his journey with Virgil down the the nine circles of Hell. During his journey Dante will experience many sins and temptations that a soul would need to overcome before reaching salvation. The Divine Comedy was written many centuries ago and yet the poem still remains influential work; where its allegory can still be relevant from the world we exist in.
